The policies that ship with the community edition can be adapted to suit your needs.  If you know XML then just edit the existing policy template that ships with VMI (make sure you take a backup first) and then adjust it accordingly.

Although the policies have a security angle you can write a policy to query just about anything.  Check out the policy template how to either in the support category on the forum or at vminformer support.
